Tests and Examinations for English Learners
There is a wide range of tests and examinations designed to measure the English-language competence of people whose mother tongue is not English. Many of them focus on the candidate's ability to function in a specific environment, though some are of a more general nature. The majority of them have their Origin in the United Kingdom or United States.
- Academic (A) - typically required by universities and colleges of higher education
- Work or Business (W) - typically required by companies
- General (G) - for the candidate's personal interest or required by some government or other agencies, for example for immigration purposes
- Young Learners (YL) -typically for the candidate's personal interest or future career
