1) Bill was the friendliest man I ever knew. He passed away a few years ago.
2) Bill was the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.
3) Bill is the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.
4) Tom is the handsomest man I ever met. And he doesn't seem to age at all.
