Which are correct:

1) Bill was the friendliest man I ever knew. He passed away a few years ago.
2) Bill was the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.
3) Bill is the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.

4) Tom is the handsomest man I ever met. And he doesn't seem to age at all.

Gratefully,

1) Bill was the friendliest man I ever knew. He passed away a few years ago.
OK

2) Bill was the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.
--> Bill was the friendliest man I had ever known. He passed away a few years ago.

3) Bill is the friendliest man I have ever known. He passed away a few years ago.
Grammatical but contextually inappropriate, since Bill is apparently dead. Correction as (2)

4) Tom is the handsomest man I ever met. And he doesn't seem to age at all.
OK.
