Hi everyone, I'm new here to this website and am desperate for help/advice/suggestions -anything really! I teach at an IB school in India and have students in my ESL class from backgrounds where they do not speak English at home and parents are unable to provide support - either themselves or get help from tutors for financial reasons. These kids have been with me for almost 2 years and I see hardly any progress when it comes to sentence structure, grammar, organizing an essay or story. I don't know what to do anymore and in Grade 4 and 5, these students make up 50-75% of my class. What am I doing wrong? Do you have any suggestions as to how they can be helped. I have 52 students (they come to me at separate times in batches of about 10-12.
These kids can communicate in English and can comprehend instructions in class - they are at an elementary-pre-intermediate level mostly, although a few of them struggle to read 3-4 letter words as well. Help!! Any advice would be appreciated.
Help - children not making much progress!
