online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
Why online tutoring is being preferred over traditional face to face in house tutoring? Cost factor, more professionalism, monitoring, discussion facilities or flexibility etc. Is it really effective?

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
In the two types of settings, the learner needs to be totally involved in the process. He/She has to be focused otherwise learning doesn't occur. The difference I think is the speed. In the online tutoring you don't have to go out, face traffic, weather and other unexpected situations.
On line, yes, means face to face interaction and a real one.

Online training: advantages worth considering.
• Online courses offer a great training opportunity at entry level. They can provide a thorough grounding in a new career and the right tools to approach a new profession within a manageable amount of time and finances.
• Online courses offer a convenient way to test the water and allow you to see if teaching is indeed for you. People’s motivations to become a teacher are manifolds. What often happens is that of those who trained, some will find after a couple of years’ teaching that they don't like it at all and will move into an entirely new direction, whilst others will stay with the profession and go on to a Diploma course and further professional development.
• Online courses allow you to study while holding onto your daytime job or taking care of your family, or fulfilling prior study commitments. An online student can usually take the course any time during the day or week, so essay writing and researching assignments for example can be carried out whenever it suits you.
• Online courses allow you to correspond with qualified teacher trainers from wherever you are in the world. Even if you are in a remote area of the planet, as long as you have an Internet connection you can have access to top teacher trainers and benefit from their knowledge and experience.
• Online courses allow you to choose your personal tutor. How many traditional courses have more than one or two teacher trainers available at any one time? And how many will allow you to switch onto another tutor if you are not happy with your current one?
• Online courses give flexibility. Many students work on their course during the middle of the night or early in the morning. The flexibility of the course makes it possible for them to complete their course, while attending in house courses might be impossible due to their work schedules.
• Online courses are very affordable and can be undertaken without breaking the bank. Working online allows online course providers to cut down considerably on overheads. This saving can then be passed on to their students resulting in low course fees.
• Online courses allow one-on-one interaction with your personal tutor 24/7. The Internet makes it possible for you to ask questions and receive the answer back almost immediately.

Hi there,
With Skype and webcam online tutoring can allow teacher and student to build a relationship, which to me is one of the more rewarding aspects of teaching.
However given the choice I prefer in house by MILES. I mean incomparably!
To see what I mean watch this 5 minute video demonstration of how I teach children one on one focusing completely on listening and speaking skills in the demo. It might not be the only way to teach but it's certainly one that my pupils love.
Enjoy the video!

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
I sort of compare online/f2f teaching with online newspapers, magazines, and books with the ones you can hold in your hand. Although most of the content I read is online, it just feels right about sitting down with something paper in hand. Many other people similarly prefer to read books and other long works off the computer.
Online lessons are similar, I think. There are so many benefits, like ICAL_Pete mentioned. But I like being in a classroom with the students face-to-face.

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
Tutoring online has the most potential, but depending on your set up, there can be many problems.
Possible problems
Your students are technologically challenged.
The connection between you and your students is poor.
Intermittent problems caused by various software installations.
Alleviating new students fear of being scammed.
Advantages
No commute required to get to work.
You have the whole world as your student base.
Your schedule can be as flexible as you want it to be.
If I had to choose between house teaching and online teaching, I would choose online teaching every time.

Amen, ICAL_Pete .
Just to add a note... I have many students that I begin teaching face-to-face that later decide to study on-line with me whenever they or I decide to move to another country. Once a student knows the level of quality to expect from you, the fact that you are teaching on-line becomes irrelevant.
Sincerely,

Just to say that I find students at lower levels definitely benefit from the face-to-face environment. At higher levels, on-line might be equally beneficial but to begin with, it's hard to compare with an in house situation which provides students with a more natural setting.
Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
Hey hi
well i have been taking classes online for a long time now
well the difference i found in home tutor and online tutor is significant. I love studying online because these days, there is no difference in both the types of tutoring. Everyone loves to spend much of their time over internet. So i found online tutoring pretty interesting and have helped a lot in my studies.
These online tutoring companies use such a great technology these days wherein they share a virtual classroom with the help of whiteboard which is shared by both the tutor and the student.
its pretty much the same session as it is in home tutoring, because in this one too - you can ask question, u see the tutor writing and solving your query and both of them actively participate in the task .. I love my online tutors which provide help in different subjects and use different technique and strategies to make the session interesting.
There are some great packages like instant answer where in a student can ask question at any point of time in the day and get answer to his question at the same time
Exam Preparation also helps students to prepare accordingly for their examination in a short time span.
So finally I love online tutoring ......... Don't You ?

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
Honestly I feel online learning leaves much to be lacking. You can't be sure if you have the attention of the person your talking to they could be watching tv or not paying any attention to your lesson. The other thing about it is as a teacher you don't want to end up being lazy about teaching to the point were you'll stay at home and teach. While sure its great if someone is sick and cant have a face to face with you I don't think its a permanent solution to all teaching. Its bad enough when kids are in school trying to check there Iphones or trying to sneak ipods and listen to music instead of paying attention. But if you give them a computer at home they have nothing to stop them from ignoring what there being taught and that means they won't learn the lessons and you'll be blamed as the teacher for not effectively teaching them...samjenkin wrote:Hey hi

As both a teacher and student, I would choose online learning over conventional learning any day. The Internet is the way of the future. ICAL_Pete has already raised most of the advantages about online learning.
One thing not so good about online teaching is when it comes to younger kids. I don't think it's a very viable way of teaching at all, because kids need that face to face interaction.

the problem with online tutoring is the attention span of the student
Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
Being a tutor is not easy and again being a good tutor is further tough. Adequate tutoring tips are needed in order to flourish as a wonderful tutor. Willingness to work is indeed the primary criterion in order to be a great tutor.
Be prepared and be well planned before you start even as a tutor as these two stands as the elementary base for being a good tutor. You should plan it well how you are going to present things and actually what you would be presenting. Well planning and preparation eliminates a lot of tension. Then comes the most vital part and that is the practice. The more you practice the more you become perfect. So you must be well practiced in order to flourish as a good tutor. Get ready to answer whatever the student asks. You should have answer to all of their queries. Patience is indeed necessary here and to be patient is therefore another important tutoring tip. It`s not necessary to cover whatever is written in the book but what is necessary is to make them understand the crux of the thing. Finally it is passion to be a good tutor will make you to be a great tutor. Tutoring is just not a job but is a profession hence adequate tutoring tips and that fire that is there inside you indeed helps you in being the best.

Whether online tutoring or home tutoring, what matters is how the teacher connects with the children. I have bee online tutoring for a while using Skype for taking classes and it makes no difference to me as you can take classes while also monitoring what's happening out there in the class. There are instances where online ESL classes are conducted via windows live support chat and tech support

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
I think Home tutoring is better than online tutoring. Kids getting special attention at home. You cannot judge the improvement of kid by sitting miles away from him. I am always support home tutoring.
Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
I'm torn between the two. There's is so much more hand-on work that goes into teaching face to face. You get to know the person, their learning styles and as such, you can cater your workshops to suit them. Online pays better and has it's own advantages but you never really get to know your students. It's strictly curriculum based and I find it somehow less stressful.

For myself I have always taught in the traditional classroom, this was mainly in Japan and the UAE.
However for the past 3 years I have been teaching online with great success and I can recommend this medium to all English teachers.
The biggest advantages for myself are:
- You are your own boss, no middle man!
- No commuting!
- You can design the lesson as you like.
Just my opinion on the subject.

Hi,
For me I have to say I really prefer teaching online. I think it does depend on what kind of person you are though.
I used to teach at many language schools in Japan, and well, after spending many years commuting in horrific conditions, it's enough to make you prefer the online medium.
But, of course you do miss the social side of speaking to other teachers and having that community. But then again, not having a "boss" is definitely a good thing!
Cheers

Re: online tutoring V/S in house tutoring
A bad tutor can do more damage in person than an online tutor. Their lesson plans also tend to be more rigid and developed for the average student, instead of being tailored to the individual. Overall, the many benefits of online tutoring should not be seen as a reason to abandon traditional learning. Instead, online tutors should be used to supplement and expand on the material learned with traditional methods.
Online Tutor USA offers high-end, results-oriented learning solutions for discerning students and academic professionals.
