It or They (Referring to "Committee")?

Post by winstein »

Hey guys! I'm revising some writing I did and I came across this sentence and I'm not sure if it's appropriate to use "it" or "they".

"If every member of the committee votes "yes", ______ will be the first committee to have a unanimous vote."

I know committee is a singular noun, so my original though was to use "it" (as "it" would be referring to the "committee").

But the phrase "every member" throws me off. Can a group of people be referred to as a committee? If so, "they" would be the best option (I think). Thoughts?

In this as in most such cases either is possible, but with AmE normally preferring the singular (it).
