settlers
This page is about the doublespeak term settlers
Meaning
people who build homes and towns on other people's land
For example
- Wouldn't you be upset if armed settlers came and built towns on your land?
- After getting rid of the indigenous people, our early settlers began farming the land.
When used as a euphemism for invaders who live on land that was taken from the original owners by force, "settler" is doublespeak. But when used to mean someone who's settled on land that wasn't previously owned or occupied, or someone who's using the land after getting permission from the owners, it isn't doublespeak.
