Writing Prompt ~ Punctuation Practice

Posted by: Tara Benwell

Writing Prompt: There are many different types of punctuation marks in English. Proper punctuation makes it easier for readers to understand your writing. Proper spacing after punctuation is also important. In English, a space comes after (not before) most punctuation marks, such as a full stop (period), question mark, exclamation mark, comma, colon or semicolon. Review the basic punctuation marks in English. Then demonstrate your understanding of these symbols by writing a reminder note to a family member about some chores that need to be done. When proofreading, check your spacing as well as your punctuation marks.

Example

Hey Max,
Please take out the garbage after school. Don’t forget to check the fridge for rotten food! The recycling (in the blue box) needs to go out too. Do you have any papers on your desk that can be recycled? Please recycle/throw out whatever you don’t need on your desk. The garbage has to be at the curb before 6am. You know what that means, right? When I get home, I don’t want to hear you say this: “I forgot, Mom.”
Love ya,
Mom
