Trump Cancels Denmark Trip Because Greenland Is Not for Sale

President Trump cancelled his trip to Denmark after the Danish prime minister told him that Greenland is not for sale. The US president had recently expressed interest in the country. Greenland is an autonomous Danish territory located east of the Canadian Arctic. While Trump had called a US purchase of Greenland a big deal, the prime minister of Denmark called the idea absurd. In 1946, US president Harry Truman attempted to buy Greenland due to its strategic location. As melting ice opens up shipping routes and allows resources to become more accessible, Trump has taken a renewed interest in the area.

Comprehension Questions

  1. Why did the US president cancel an upcoming trip to Denmark?
  2. How does Denmark’s prime minister feel about Trump’s interest in Greenland?
  3. Why does the report mention a former US president?

Discussion Question

Why would Greenland be a strategic island for the US to own? Do you think it’s absurd, or do you think this deal might happen one day?
