Hypocrisy Unmasked?
Posted by: Josef EssbergerA couple of tweets from Twitter:
The verb unmask means to uncover, reveal, show what lies underneath. In this short video clip from the G20 in Rome, do we see the reality – what politicians really think about the masks they are so keen for the whole world to don?
Please leave your thoughts on these persons and their behaviour in the comments below.

I agree 100%, this whole mask fiasco is to keep people under the soles of their feet!
I like that the site brought this up! The people that didn’t like it, well boohoo! -

Thanks for this interesting discussion opportunity. It seems to be one rule for governments and another for the plebs (that’s us, btw). Now let’s watch them all fly off in private jets to COP26 to eat gourmet meat banquets and lecture us on global warming.

Ha! They take masks off very fast 💨

Ashok Welma says:
Great discussion point! As an educator it’s important we show hypocrisy whenever it manifests. We vote for these people. They are our representatives not masters. Students can still think for themselves. Probably they will, at some future election.

Arian says:
Trouble is this is not only time we see officials put on masks for the public people and take off when they think cameras are finished.

I agree that this is not the forum for this debate.
Education needs to be as nonpartisan as possible and nonjudgmental.
Educators need to teach vocabulary and thinking skills so our students can think for themselves to reach their informed conclusions.
Disappointed when I read this today. I have used this site for years teaching English Language Learners and low level literacy students.

I feel that it’s not unacceptable to include this on an English language website / forum.. Maybe it is you sir, who has been “unmasked”? I am very disappointed.. I am not alone in feeling this way, as I see noted in some other comments… Debate is excellent if balanced arguments are put forward at the outset..

Really, hypocrisy in its purest form

Greetings to All Teachers & Students,
In my opinion, it is better that they try for spreading Love and peace around the world, not selling their weapons.

I can see the President of the country I live with sadness. Here, in Brazil, he is totally against the using of masks. And we see that his mask falls all the time when he says he didn’t get the vaccine and appears without wearing a mask with a large ammount of people, walking around him without masks, too.

Bedri Chaparov says:
Shocking, I am irritated how the profesional liers has surrounded us. And also while they were discussing the climate change and fosil fuels in Rome. Bidden had a tour of Rome and Vatikan with convoy of 85 heavy fossil fuel vehicles. The leaders must show acction before they ask us to act!

I was thinking more in terms of Porlock.
-
Seamus says:
Bill – In British English ‘people’ is the accepted plural of person, while ‘persons’ is reserved as a formal version used, predominantly, in legal terms – such as ‘the police are searching for a person, or persons, unknown’
My use of ‘more correcter’ was clearly a deliberate error, as a counterpoint, too subtle for you!
-
Bill Thelwell says:
Seamus – I believe that in British English at least using “persons” in a context like this carries a subtle meaning which I needn’t bore the unenlightened with. Also in British English, we say “more correct” rather than “more correcter”.

A bit of a low blow from a language website.
Politicians are well known for their hypocrisy but, in this case, they were asked by members of the press to remove the masks so that they could be understood in a noisy room. Can I also comment on the poor use of English?
‘Please leave your thoughts on these persons and their behaviour in the comments below.’Surely ‘Please leave your thoughts on these people, and their behaviour, in the comment box below.’ would be more correcter

Mr Roberto
You stop it with masks. So why you think thos politicians take thei masks off. Maybe they never study medicine? -
Jennifer Worden says:
I am tired of the hypocrisy of the politicians! Enough of this!

anton gastin says:
why they take the masks off?
-
David Major says:
Politicians look like fair game to me @Helen. Do as we say not as we do. And now they are cruising around in 80-car convoys and flying off to Glasgow in private jets to lecture us about climate change.
-
Lek says:
is dat what dey call political correctness? lol
-
Louise says:
What is this doing on an English language teaching website? I’d never use this with my students regardless of how I feel about it. Unsubscribing now.
-
Helen says:
Does anyone else but me think that this is not the forum for slating politicians?
-
Matt Kendry says:
@roberto I think the point escapes you. It’s not whether masks are good or bad. It’s that politicians only put them on for the cameras. They tell us to do one thing and then they themselves do another. The question is about politicians and hypocrisy, not masks.
-
Roberto says:
How would you stop an airborne virus from spreading? Have you ever studied medicine?
-
Adrianna says:
Disgusting behavior! Politicians think we stupid haha
But THEY are more stupid, and ignorant.
