Learning wise it’s good but as a story, nor good nor bad.

I understand the chapel a little but I do not understand the winepress and the metro. But I like how the writer uses the words; it makes it special and interesting.

I don’t understand. I think Prof.DHIAKOBLI is the killer. But why did he kill two women similar to the inspector’s wife and lover, but not the wife and the lover ? An error or something made him to do it…

I can’t agree with @KT that the stories are anti-immigrant. In The Winepress it seems that the main character (Charles Jousselin de Gruse) really did not approve of his guests’ views on immigrants. In fact, that was almost the whole point of the story.
“This evening’s guests were all European and all equally convinced that immigration was at the root of Europe’s problems. Charles de Gruse said nothing. ***He had always concealed his contempt for such ideas.*** And, in any case, he had never much cared for these particular guests.”

The moral of the story, i guess, is about revealing the love dilemma, in a raw way. Love is not about being shocked and stunned with a younger person, but being loyal to the promises you have made. Love is a decision, and implies sacrifice. The work of Diakhobly is figurative, i mean, teaching to the inspector the possible arm he can do to the two girls by his ambiguity way of being.

After reading these three stories, I somehow feel all of them are sending negative images of female and emigrants. In “The metro”, two women conducted crime in order for a bold man’s love, and the bald white man is the “hero” who confessed; “The chapel”, it is simply not an enjoyable story, and “The winepress”, I don’t see the main character revealed the crime; instead, he only purchased the wine and served it to his guests-if the story he told was true. That’s not a normal man will do and again, the victim is a female emigrant.
Also I will highly recommend to set an age appropriateness page before these three stories, for it’s content. -

I liked it, but the story was very long, I would have liked it to be a little shorter and that in some parts of the content it would catch the reader more.

The only thing I really liked were the lots of new words that I’ve learnt. The strory for me was boring and I didn’t like the plot and the resolution.

I read the stories it was lovable suspense “crime and love” according to me i like this and my opinion about stories i think they enlarge the ending, vololona should meet with inspector and also inspector doesn’t knew the loving rapport between her husband and vololona ,thats things should come to ending……
by the way i am feeling gratitude to read because it was exquisite form of stories, waiting for another one……. -

I like the story. I have to say that it entertained me but at the end I felt like I wanted to read more. At the end he discovered the killer by “accident” and ok, but what is next? How did they catch the Proffesor Dhiakobli?, where are the heads?. Anyways, I was involved with the story although I would extend it a little longer.

Who wants the explanation? Here’s mine. Professor needs people heads for some of his woodo rituals connected with love affairs (he mention woomen coming to him to return old partners. And the victims were all middle aged men) That’s why he speaks about sacrifices and technical details which are upon him. It was fate that policeman’s way led it straight to the criminal. And it’s a lesson too for those who leave their problems on whatever in the world including magic. Results of this could be unpredictable..

Cb says:
What I understood about the ending was the sacrifice involved two people identical to the inspectors discription that would magically give him his desire. Two bodies were needed. Not that the professor intention was to kill the inspectors lover.
-
Cb says:
Very intriguing story. I enjoyed it’s mysterious elements. Although midpoint i kind of figured out what the ending would revel.

huayen says:
oh, I got another clue about the murder. Did you read this paragraph “… You can arrange this?”
Inspector Dutruelle nodded blankly.
“Excellent, monsieur. I must know them in every detail – if I am…”. Professor Dhiakobli was described as blindness, how he could see Inspector NODDED? just because he isn’t eyeless, he just made a scene

Cathy Regar says:
A very interesting story. I had my suspicion about Professor Dhiakobli. He did the murder. My heart started pounding really hard, when I read that the two dead bodies looked similiar to the body of his wife and lover.
There were a lot of new words and this book has widenend my vocabulary.

Celine91 says:
The end is just clear! read it another time for those who could not understand.. he said that he had paid the killer and he will get him in 15 minutes. so yes Professor Dhiakobli is the murderer and he decided to kill both inspector’s wife and lover

Its an amazing story, especially the characters and their roles. The story made me boil at the prof Diakocobia, killing is not a solution. Thanks for the vocabulary.

Pam Woolford says:
There is a lot to be learned in this book. There is a good message in her with regard to the Inspector who wants his cake and eat it too. He soon found out that this isn’t always a good thing. It shows the reader that he treated his wife unfairly by having an affair with a younger person. However, the ending was clever by leaving the outcome up to the reader’s imagination. Overall a good book.

hoda says:

Sandy Yalin says:
What the writer implies is that Professor Dhiakobli is involved in the murder. This passage deals with the problems of marriage, love, money, life and murder. It is indeed complex and long. But not until the end, I have already guess out the plot.

Hemm.. It isn’t clear in the end of the story. But at least I understand :D, don’t you think he has been affected by magic?
Married man if he felt in love with another girl, it should be really deep feeling. And yeah it’s true if there is anyone said he is greedy, he never chose neither left the wife nor let the girl gone, hemm what a complicated love relationship :p -

It is very interesting story, so many new words…..and I have learnt a lot.The Inspector is quite romantic but greedy, wanting to have both, young girl and wife. But anyway, he soon found out that what he had done was not fare to his wife…..stop loving the young girl was not his thinking right now.
