You can read the Common English Idioms ebook on any device.

This ebook gives you over six hundred of the most frequent English idioms. Here is what you get for each idiom:

  • the idiom itself
  • clear explanation and meaning
  • example sentence #1 showing idiom in context
  • example sentence #2 showing idiom in context
  • multiple choice quiz question
  • answer
  • for some idioms, further details such as notes about origin or British/American usage

What are idioms?

An idiom is a group of words with a special meaning. Native English speakers learn idioms naturally from a young age, but learners of English have to study them. You might already know the meaning of every word in an idiom, but this doesn’t mean you’ll know what the idiom means. For example, if you haven’t learned the idiom call it a day, you won’t know what someone you work with means if they say “Let’s call it a day”. Even if you know what the words let’s, call and day mean, you won’t know what they’re saying. But if you’ve learned the idiom, you’ll know that they’re saying it’s time everyone finished work for the day.

Is learning idioms important?

Yes. Idioms are very common in both spoken and written English, so learning them is very important. Native speakers often use idioms when they’re speaking, so if you haven’t studied idioms you’ll have trouble understanding what they’re saying. Idioms are also very common in written English. They’re used in textbooks and novels, comics and news feeds, business letters and work emails, and so on. If you need to understand written English, or if you want to write natural-sounding English, you have to learn idioms.

Eric UM, English Learner, China ★★★★★
It zeroes in on all the right idioms across the board.

Rick, Phnom Penh, Cambodia ★★★★★
I teach at a tertiary institution in Cambodia and my first-year students tell me that idioms are rarely taught in Cambodian schools. Their claims are backed up by the clear deficit nearly every students displays in their knowledge of even the most common idioms. I’ve had to buy a range of books and supplementary materials on idioms, and I must say this e-book is one of the best. The definitions are clear, the example sentences are excellent, and the multiple-choice quiz questions are an excellent resource for both the classroom and self-study. Highly recommended!

Javi, Tijuana, Mexico ★★★★★
This is a very helpful e-book. I have studied English for many years already but still I don’t know so many idioms. So I bought this book and now I’ve learned so many of the common idioms. The best thing I like is the quiz tests for all idioms.

I know the writer Matt Errey also created the WORD UP game. He has had decades of teaching English and takes his work seriously. What makes his work so good is that he uses his creativity to make it more and more interesting. His books are a must for English teachers and a wonderful resource for learners of the language also. Buy his books, you won’t be disappointed. Then give him a review – he deserves it.

If you believe there is a role for ESL games and fun activities in your classes, and you need a handy collection that includes clear instructions for a wide range of games and activities, this ebook is for you.

  • Over 100 pages of games, quizzes and printables
  • Includes ice-breaker games for new classes
  • Entertaining filler activities for 5 to 15 minutes
  • Vocab, phrasal verb and general knowledge quizzes
  • Classic games: 20 Questions, Hot Seat, Coffee Pot
  • Word-O-Bingo with printable cards and clues
  • Spelling games and quizzes plus graded word lists
  • Playing time, player numbers and preparation time provided for every game
  • Plus! Hundreds of printable quiz questions in graded sets (with answers)

The ebook has five main sections covering icebreakers, fillers, classic ESL games, quiz games and spelling games, as below:

Icebreakers

The first section contains games that help learners in a new class get to know each other and relax. Many involve information gaps or information exchanges from which they can learn about each other. The games help to create a fun, non-threatening atmosphere that encourages students to feel comfortable in their new class.

Fillers

As the name suggests, you can use these games whenever you find yourself unexpectedly faced with a few minutes to fill during a class. This can occur when waiting for latecomers, when a lesson has to be put on hold some reason, or when a lesson has finished a little early. The games require no preparation, are easy to explain and organize, and are flexible enough to keep your students happily occupied for as long as necessary.

Classic ESL Games

The games in this section have been used in classrooms for so long that they’re often referred to as “classic ESL games”, and many teachers would consider their “box of tricks” incomplete without them. They include Hot Seat, Coffee Pot, Telephone (or Chinese Whispers), Word-O Bingo, and the most classic of them all, Twenty Questions.

Quiz Games

Most of us enjoy having our knowledge tested in quiz games, and classroom quiz games are a big hit with learners. In this section you’ll find games in which general knowledge is tested, as well as games in which various aspects of English are tested, including a wide range of vocabulary and phrasal verbs. Graded sets of quiz questions for all the games are provided.

Spelling Games

Spelling bees have long been a part of life for native English-speaking students in schools throughout the English-speaking world, and they’re now becoming part of the TOEFL world as well. The games in this section include spelling quizzes for teams and individuals. Graded word lists are provided.

This prepositions list shows you all English prepositions and gives you example sentences for each one.

Prepositions can be divided into:

  • one-word prepositions (after, in, under)
  • complex prepositions (apart from, because of, in spite of)

This ebook lists almost all the one-word prepositions and most of the complex prepositions. Here’s what it contains:

150 English prepositions, including…

  • 94 one-word prepositions
  • 56 complex prepositions
  • 400 example sentences
  • 200 quiz questions
  • illustrations
  • answers

This ebook is not a “dictionary of prepositions” because it doesn’t give meanings, which you can find in any dictionary. What it does is to give you virtually all the English prepositions in one place and show you 400 example sentences showing prepositions in context. It also tests your understanding with 200 preposition quiz questions (answers supplied).

This ebook contains a list of most English prepositions in use today.

The first section lists “one-word prepositions” (for example before, into, on). The second section lists “complex prepositions” (phrases of two or more words that function like one-word prepositions, for example according to, but for, in spite of).

The name “preposition” (pre + position) means “place before”. Prepositions usually come before another word, usually a noun or noun phrase:

  • noun
  • pronoun
  • noun phrase
  • gerund (verb in -ing form)

If a preposition does not come before another word, it is still closely linked to another word:

  • Who did you talk to?
  • To whom did you talk?
  • I talked to Jane.

Many prepositions can also be adverbs:

  • They are in the kitchen. preposition
  • Please come in. adverb

A few prepositions can also be conjunctions:

  • Everyone came but Tara. preposition
  • I asked her but she didn’t answer. conjunction
