Discussion/essay questions
- Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
Transcript
Dolphins are adorable, friendly, and playful creatures. They’re also some of the most intelligent animals in the world. They have very large brains compared to most animals. The dolphin is also one member of a small group of species that can recognize their reflections in a mirror. This shows that dolphins have self-awareness, which is a trait associated with intelligence. Dolphins also communicate with each other using whistles. They seem to use this type of communication to solve problems, which might mean that they have their own language. Dolphins even have individual names. Every dolphin has a “signature whistle” that it can use to introduce itself. Humans are still trying to understand dolphins, but if they really do have their own language, we may be able to communicate with them one day.

I think that it is very unethical to keep animals in enclosures UNLESS, they’re injured or just can’t seem to adapt in the wild, in that case i believe it’s ok to take care of them, but i don’t think they should be displayed as form of entertainment for people.

Well, I personally think that dolphins or any other animal should be in captivity, and used as a toy to earn money.
These animals must be free, enjoy their life, but in their natural environment, not in cages or aquariums. -
Luisa Marcela Alegría Martínez says:
i don’t agree about the zoos and aquariums because these uses the animals as an enterteiment and bussiness
i think that the dolphins should be free, that they can live in their natural habitat and grow in it, besides not is the same to dolphins live in a little place shut up as an aquarium that live in the big occean where they can move wherever they want and maybe have a healty life.

Valeria Beltrán Bravo says:
I consider that the zoos are animal prisions, because although we think that they are happy and have achieved adapt, but the truth is that no, the only way that they can be happy is in their natural habitat, where they can develop your skills, be free and reproduce. In many cases we also think that in the zoos they treat animals well, but they don´t, they do this with famous animals like pandas and dolphins because it represents money.
-
Alejandra Sofia Rodríguez Duque says:
I feel very powerless, because it is sad to see how far humans can go, it is disappointing to think that they physically and psychologically mistreat another living being for profit without even feeling remorse for what these animals may feel, starting with why their capture is very violent, and being in captivity they tend to have a high mortality rate because, being intelligent and sensitive, they tend to suffer anxiety and depression easily. I totally disagree with the captivity of this and all wild animals.
-
Laura Isabel Velasco Córdoba says:
I think the dolphins should be in their natural habitat, but the problems that have arisen, such as fishing against their species, have gradually led to the extinction of the dolphins. I agree that they are in zoos to protect their species, but I do not support the idea of using them as a means of entertainment for people because dolphins are still affected.
-
STEPHANIA GARZON JALVIN says:
I disagree about having dolphins trapped in an aquarium just to get them excited by going swimming in an infinite ocean to being locked in a pool. From being able to get food to receiving it in poor condition and only if the behavior is appropriate. From living with his mother to being brutally separated from her forever. From making sounds freely and communicating to not being able to because the voice itself bounces off the walls of the tank and deafening. From being able to live 25 or 30 years to living 20 at most.
This is not the life they deserve, they should be free without having to flee, because simple people just by obtaining fame and money are capable of capturing and killing dolphins to present them to the world as they domesticated them or with the simple fact to use their skin to sell it. -
Lina Isabella Muñoz Maca says:
I think that dolphins should not be locked up and oppressed from their freedom
They must be in their natural habitat since they also mistreat many of the dolphins that are in captivity and do not have the necessary conditions for a life worthy of them. -
Mariana Arias says:
I think that dolphins are wild animals, although they are really smart and can learn tricks that humans enjoy, dolphins deserve to be in their habitat, living free and away from training that tires and stress them. I personally see it as a mistake and reprehensible use and exploit an animal for the purpose of human entertainment and profit with it.

Sharyth Velasco Diaz 11C says:
In my opinion, dolphins are wonderful animals and that is why I would like them to be allowed to express how they really interact, I think it would be a more appropriate way to better understand the personality of these intelligent and cunning animals. I would like to interact with them and observe their reactions to many things.
-
Luna Angélica Giraldo Pulgarin says:
I think that the dolphins must stay in his natural habitat, the sea, because they are the aquatic animals more intelligent and they have very large brains. In my opinion I don´t like that they are used for human entertainment, because many times mistreat them for learn different tricks. So would be good that all the dolphins remain in the place to which they belong. In this way we could help them for go back at home with the others of his species for continue with his Lifecycle in total liberty.

I understand why the discussion on this is so controversial. The main thing is the safety and care that these animals have and in some aquariums or zoos there are good conditions that resemble the natural habitat of the animal and that also provide good care, in this case i don´t see bad that some species spend their life there, but there are other places where the treatment and conditions are really bad to the point of considering it illegal, that in terms of the careful, but in the matter that they should not be locked up because they belong outside and free, i think it depends a lot on the species and the way their gets to the zoo, for a wild animal it would be very difficult.

KAREN XIMENA ALZATE SANTIAGO 11B says:
I think that really that of using animals for human entertainment is the worst thing that exists, since they are subjected to more abuse while they are trained, we must bear in mind that they are Iliving beings and who feel like us think that really that of using animals for human entertainment is the worst thing that exists, since they are abuse while They are being trained. We must bear in mind that the animals are living beings living beings and who feel like us, in addition to this the Dolphins and the other animals that are used for these practices are isolated from their families. Many times they take to the hatchlings, as they are said to be easier to handle, but really this is depressing because they suffer too much and I think that all the animals that are in the zoos and in the water parks be returned to their own habitats.
-
Angela Isabel Mejía Collazos says:
In my place I feel very bad, because I do not agree that the animals remain locked within 4 walls, it is very unfair that they cannot enjoy their life freely and we do, enjoying them as if they were a simple attraction for our own entertainment. many people will take as an excuse that they are protecting them and providing them with excellent care, but if this were really true, just as they were helping and caring for them, they should be released as soon as they were fully recovered.
Usually I hate going to the zoo, because I don’t like to see the animals locked up, they can be very cute but nobody knows how they really feel when they are there. If the human being has the right to be free, why are the animals not if we are equal to them? The only thing that differentiates us is that we are more developed animals, but we do not use it correctly. My father works at the CRC, thanks to him I have been able to meet various animals, which perhaps many other people have not been able to have that same luck to see and it is totally pleasant to see them tour their territory without anyone bothering them, in turn I have had lucky to have that great love for animals, which would never change, for this simple reason is that I do not agree with the places where they have animals in captivity taking from them the fortune of certain human beings.
I would like that after this pandemic that forced all humans to be locked up, they would understand how they live daily by depriving them of their freedom. If we can’t bear being locked up, why should they tolerate it?11B

Laura Sofía Jiménez Ortíz says:
n my opinion the dolphins that are kept in captivity suffer too much since they are a very emotional and intelligent species and although they are used to entertain people or help children with disabilities, in these places they are subjected to great amounts of stress, anxiety or depression and chemicals such as chlorine that can affect them.
On the other hand, it puts them at risk when capturing him, as this is an aggressive process in which they are persecuted and cornered. It is unfortunate that they are taken out of their habitat in which they can move freely and become confined spaces that carry them. to become sedentary and weaker in the face of various diseases. -
Laura Isabella Penagos Mosquera says:
In my opinion, dolphins are animals that work with stress and suffer cruelty during shows by tourists. In addition, when they are in captivity they are constantly sick with pneumonia, and they suffer from abuse, the excess of chlorine burns them and the lack of salt affects their normal life, many of them die of heart failure due to the stress and shock to which they are. They are also trained in many centers through food deprivation and although it is not generalized, cases of physical violence againts these animals have been reported, with trainers jumping, hitting or throwing toxic objects at them, often sadly dolphins they are illegally caught and sold to parks around the world.
Many of the dolphins that are considered less “attractive” and therefore less profitable are killed during the capture process and sold as meat to unsuspecting consumers who do not know what.
The dolphins are finally ripped from their families wild, including babies, who normally stay with their mothers and for this reason. They develop painful illnesses, and die due to stressful conditions in captivity. For this, dolphins and other animals in nature deserve all the respect and admiration in the world! -
Mariam Aluna Terán Manzano says:
I consider that dolphins and other animals have to be in the nature. The natural habitat is the right place for each animal. Zoos generally consider animals a simple commodity and experiment. They often buy, sell, loan, and trade animals with very little consideration. Each animal belongs to a natural habitat. In this place the animals adapt to certain activities. Zoos withdraw animals from their social group and habitat and force animals to adapt to new routines and totally unfamiliar cagemates. Also, some zoos promote entertainment and not education. Most people visit zoos for fun and entertainment. Some people completely ignore each animal’s information. Animals should not be an entertainment medium. If we really want to admire and observe an animal, we can do it from its natural habitat, but not in a zoo. I do not agree with zoos or aquariums because:
-Animals do not thrive in a wild environment. Zoos hold back the potential of animals as living beings.
-The costs to keep animals healthy are high, so zoos prefer to invest less in their care and they keep animals in precarious conditions with the purpose of obtaining greater profits.
-Animals are not free to hunt, reproduce, or exercise. This leads to multiple ailments and continued discomfort.
-Some species such as lions, tigers, elephants or crocodiles need open spaces with rivers and abundant flora to cover a certain degree of well-being and, unfortunately, zoos do not have the capacity to recreate an ecosystem of that magnitude.
-Animal abuse in zoos can occur accidentally or intentionally, this may be because zoos do not provide the necessary care or because zoo visitors have inappropriate and unfavorable behaviors with animals.
In conclusion, zoos are prisons for animals that aspire to be free in their own habitats, although many modern zoos want to keep animals comfortable, but they are unable to provide the freedom associated with the natural world of the animal. I have been reading many about zoos and I could tell that the costs in a zoo are too high, but those people can invest in keeping the natural habitat healthy, and the costs would be lower. -
Natalia Lopez says:
I think dolphins should be in their natural habitat, where they’re quiet and not in an aquarium or a zoo where they can’t get the treatment they deserve, this for them can be stressful because of the amount of people who visit them, the uncontrolled feeding, the noise, the harassment. They will certainly be better off in their natural habitat, as they will be free without any pressure.

Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I think the reason why this is a controversial topic is because of all the damage that been in captivity can cause to an animal, with the pass of time they lose their hunting instintics , they get stressed and they even can die.
In my opinion, we can´t kinap an animal just because it intertains us -
Yulieth Alejandra Sanchez Perafan says:
•Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I think that these animals should live in their natural habitat because they are living beings that need freedom. I also think that dolphins shouldn’t be in zoos or aquariums because they are forced to entertain people who go to these places and often dolphins are mistreated to carry out these activities.
Although these places are adapted to make animals are comfortable, it isn’t the same as their natural habitat because the animals can’t develop freely. -
Natalia Lizbeth Zambrano Restrepo says:
I think that all animals must have their true habitat, in this case dolphins, since through the whole show that we are shown we do not know the handling they will receive, but on the other hand if they are in their habitat, they could also be in danger since the human race has been responsible for contaminating causing damage not only to dolphins but to the rest of the species

Catalina Tróchez Muñoz says:
Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I think that dolphins shouldn’t be in zoos or aquariums just for entertaining people and profit from it, because sometimes the conditions are precarious and the locations are very small. I think that humans shouldn’t take advantage of the intelligence of dolphins or any animal in general. Animals shouldn’t be locked up unless this is for their conservation in good conditions and not for human entertainment.
-
Mariana Isabel Prado says:
R / I think that dolphins should not be in aquariums or prisoners in a zoo, they are too intelligent and beautiful animals but we as humans are having them in our power to show and a living being is not a clown nor is it to have fun watching it I wish I could understand their sounds and know if they really like to be prisoners

Jary Vanessa Parra Barona says:
My opinion that the dolphins are in zoos and aquariums at this time is affirmative since taking into account the contamination that there is today in the oceans is incredible and when you think about it, it is better that our dolphins are in the zoo and in the aquariums.

I’m agree with the animals belong in the wild, i feel that is correct leave that the animals live and keeping their liberty as the human also live in liberty, the animals aren’t the entertainment of people, and if we are rationals, just we should care of them, help them when they need it, protect them and keep their habit clean and safe. Why should we do this? ’cause although the animals can’t talk, they express their pain, their anguish or their suffering. The only thing that we need to understand is that animals feel like people.

Luisa Erazo Pérez says:
I feel that what these people say is true, becouse i believe that no animal should be locked up, either in cages or at homes just for the fun or interest of some humans, since animals were born where they were born and are where they are, because that is the way it should be and nobody should make them their prisoners. 11A

Laura Valentina Realpe Hoyos says:
I think that with the intelligence of dolphins and their unique abilities, it is not surprising that they are used as an object of study by those seeking to discover the mysteries of intelligence and communication. Capturing them is difficult for them because they are taken from the sea and away from their families, so this is nothing more than a crime committed against nature.

For many people it is fun and tender to see the animals do tricks, but I do not like this activity, the animals must be in their habitat where they can be free, without suffering any kind of abuse, they are free beings not objects to have fun while they are locked up.
-
Gabriela Fernández Cerón says:
I think that animals belong to their habitat, nothing and nobody has to disturb them and get them out of where they belong. It is a lack of respect for these animals that exist before us, which show us to be more noble than human beings themselves.
-
Mónica Isabella Quirá Fernández says:
Dolphins are highly intelligent animals as several studies have shown that they are adept at solving dolphin problems. I think the problem is not that they are in a zoo or a place like that, but the way in which they are treated. In addition there are dolphins that are raised in zoos and are well cared for and perhaps taking them out into their natural habitat is something strong for them.
my point of view is neutral depends more on how they are cared for because we see that their habitat is contaminated so it is a bigger problem. -
Lina Marcela Chantre says:
i feel that each living being have a place in the world which it belongs and in that place they are free. Humans must not take to the animal as if they were of their property and a lot less use them like a form of get money, taking them out from places to which they belong and have them locked up in places that never will be equal to their habitats.
-
Catherict Daniela Yalanda Tunubalá says:
In my personal opinion I consider that animals should be in their natural habitat and in the case of animals such as dolphins should be in their true home, it is sad that people use them as an attraction in zoos and ignore the damaging damage they cause in they. Dolphins are mammals that teach us great things from their peculiar ability to communicate, among other things, and we must learn to appreciate them from their natural habit, since we torture them by wanting to have them on display as zoos do.
-
Eublin Dayana Pizo Solis says:
Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I mainly agree that animals must live in their natural habitat, and I find it very bad that they are used as an attraction in zoos for other people, they are not toys, they are very intelligent animals, they have their own communication in addition They are very friendly and the human being uses them in a very ugly way, there are people who treat them well and give them food like others who do not, that’s why they should be in their natural habitat happy and in family not than they are locked in small tanks of water where they are not free as they should be.

Juliana Orozco Torres says:
Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
From my point of view, as very animal should be free, without having it locked up in aquarium or a zoo, since in these places their trainers many of them may mistreat or not feed them in aquariums but we don’t really know how they feel or how they treat them.

I feel that most people don’t care animal life,We see animals as human entertainment, although many times We don’t notice this.People must learn the true meaning of animales in the world and also that our actions are consistent with our thoughts.

Angie Castillo says:
The truth is that I do not agree that they use animals for that type of fun so they have a good treatment, that is not their habitat and it is not their way of life, they have to be in the habitat that is and not locked up.
Now much less if they treat you badly. Animals are innocent beings who do not deserve harm. -

R/ I think that dolphins and all animals must be in their habitat but they must also be accompanies by humans because many animals get sick, after humans cure the animals they should go back to their habitat, hmans do not they sould keep animals for other people’s fun.

I have many conflicting opinions, since many times we observe that the zoos they do not give due care to animals, it is this that i think they must be in their natural environment and not locked up because after all these animals felt locked up and suffocated. but also understad that many other cases we observe that animals are born there and it would be impossible to put them in their natural enviroment since they would not know to defend themselves, in conclusion I agrre with the zoological ones but if they have good care and conditioning for these animals .

In my opinion all the animals should have a dignified life without abuse and be forced to do things that aren’t necessary in their environment or condition. Dolphins are very friendly animals and deserve to be un their habitat in a big space where they can live in peace.
I think zoos are a way to exploit animals by amusing humans for money. Animals sufre and feel just like us, that’s why they deserve their freedom like us -

Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I think that dolphins must be in their natural habitat, although there are several zoos that seek care and preservation of the different species that exist, it can also be said that man uses animals to please a group of spectators who do not know Find out what can happen to dolphins and are only interested in the show, cases of abuse can be presented but these are very few since it generates stress and can cause death, it can also be said that not all dolphins They manage to get used to being in aquariums that humans try to make their natural habitat look like, causing them to become stressed and may die from this cause.

I think that while the animals are not maltreated, exploited or flattened, it is not bad for them to live in zoos.
In the case of dolphins, this being an species in which it is on the verge of extinction due to illegal fishing with dimanima, I think that it is better that they be cared for by an expert so that in this way they can reproduce and save from extinction without Irrigation, because of this I think that the fact that they use dolphins to train them is not bad since this is one of the most intelligent species of animals11-A

kelly jazmin sanchez gutierrez says:
-I think that dolphins are free animals, that they should live in their corresponding habitat with the rest of their species, either for protection or simply to survive, on the other hand, I do not agree that some of them are trained by humans for their benefit, since some of them generally hurt them to do what is asked of them, thus causing great trauma to the animal that prevents them from living happily

Laura Sofía Cardona García says:
I think that the problem is not that they are in aquariums or zoos, the real problem is the treatment that they receive.
Many times although the ocean is their natural habitat, the sea is so polluted that they can die from the waste we throw away to their habitat.
We can also think how these little animals feel, because as we have already seen they are intelligent enough to see themselves in a mirror, so could we compare ourselves with them now? now in quarantine, many of us feel trapped and wish we could get out and continue our normal activities, but as a dolphins we are locked up.11C

Valeria Muneval Lis says:
I feel a little sad and powerless when I cannot do anything for these defenseless little ones, although it also depends on where they are, there are many zoos that aim to preserve and care for the life of these animals, instead of some that are there out and for the cruelty of the human being comes to his death.

1. Dolphins are animals that should in their habitat and be free. I don’t agree with the zoo, it Seems to me they hurt animals just for fun humans. There are many ways to have fun without hirting an animal. These beings are forced to do stunts to amuse the public and this shouldn’t be so.
In my opinion, I will never agree to these habits because all animals hace the right to be free, be in their habitat and don’t receive bad treatment -

•No I don’t agree that have dolphins in zoos and shows because they like us should be free and should be in the habitad when were created, and I think that they are too spectacular and intelligents and they haven’t to live prisioners for people who take advantage to earn money.
-
Camila Alejandra Valbuena Caicedo says:
I personally do not give importance to having them in zoos and aquariums but what I do not agree with is that they take them for the entertainment of the people, since the animals are not played so that they are taking them of entertainment to distract the people’s minds since they are living beings like us.

Dolphins are sometimes kept in aquariums or zoos and taught tricks for human entertainment. This is a controversial topic because many people believe that dolphins and other animals belong in the wild. How do you feel about this?
I think that all animals should keep in their natural environment in wich they were created, because, for me, the animals have not been created for entertainment or human fun, they, should be free like us. Also, I consider that the dolphins really are Smart animals, they are adorable and their shows are beautiful, but that´s not reason for keep them in aquariums or zoos all their lifes! Well, as I said earlier, they, like us, should to be free in their natural envaironment, in the sea, they should can swim and enjoy their lifes every days
